چکیده

Optical imaging studies of orientation and direction preference in visual cortex have typically used vector averaging to obtain angle and magnitude maps. This method has shown half-rotation orientation singularities (pinwheels) located within regions of low orientation vector magnitude. Direction preference is generally orthogonal to orientation preference, but often deviates from this, particularly in regions of low direction vector magnitude. Linear regions of rapid change in direction preference terminate in or near orientation singularities. The vector-averaging method is problematic however because it does not clearly disambiguate spatial variation in orientation tuning width from variation in height. It may also wrongly estimate preferred direction in regions where preference is weak. In this paper we analyze optical maps of cat visual cortex by fitting model tuning functions to the responses. This new method reveals features not previously evident. Orientation tuning height and width vary independently across the map: tuning height is always low near singularities, however regions of broad and narrow orientation tuning width can be found in regions of low tuning height, often alternating in a spoke-like fashion around singularities. Orientation and direction preference angles are always closely orthogonal. Reversals in direction preference form lines that originate precisely in orientation singularities.

Response properties of local field potentials and multiunit activity in the mouse visual cortex

Extracellular local field potentials (LFPs) and multiunit activity (MUA) reflect the spatially integrated activity of multiple neurons in a given cortical structure. In the cat and primate visual cortices, these signals exhibit selectivity for visual stimulus features, such as orientation, direction of motion or spatial frequency. In the mouse visual cortex, a model which has been increasingly ...

The Development of Orientation and Direction Selectivity in the Primary Visual Cortex and Lateral Geniculate Nucleus

Classic studies of lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) and visual cortex (V1) in carnivores and primates have found that a majority of neurons in LGN exhibit a center-surround organization, while V1 neurons exhibit strong orientation selectivity and, in many species, direction selectivity. This has led to the prevailing model that orientation and direction selectivity are computed anew in the cort...

Motion direction signals in the primary visual cortex of cat and monkey.

When an image feature moves with sufficient speed it should become smeared across space, due to temporal integration in the visual system, effectively creating a spatial motion pattern that is oriented in the direction of the motion. Recent psychophysical evidence shows that such "motion streak signals" exist in the human visual system. In this study, we report neurophysiological evidence that ...

Dual Inhibitory Mechanisms for Definition of Receptive Field Characteristics in a Cat Striate Cortex

In single cells of the cat striate cortex, lateral inhibition across orientation and/or spatial frequency is found to enhance pre-existing biases. A contrast-dependent but spatially non-selective inhibitory component is also found. Stimulation with ascending and descending contrasts reveals the latter as a response hysteresis that is sensitive, powerful and rapid, suggesting that it is active i...

An fMRI study of human visual cortex in response to spatiotemporal properties of visual stimuli

ABSTRACT  Background: The brain response to temporal frequencies (TF) has been already reported, but with no study reported for different TF with respect to various spatial frequencies (SF).  Materials and Methods: fMRI was performed by 1.5T GE-system in 14 volunteers during checkerboard, with TFs of 4, 6, 8 and 10Hz in low and high SFs of 0.5 and 8cpd.  Results: Average percentage BOLD signa...
